Singapore Homemade Popiah
Believed to be of Hokkien origin, the Popiah is a well-loved traditional Chinese snack that can be easily made at home with just a few simple ingredients! 😛 Because they’re so easy and incredibly fun to make, many of us may be familiar with DIY Popiah Parties where friends and family gather together to wrap their own Popiah rolls on the spot!
Ingredients
Main Popiah Filling
- 1 Big Turnip (Cut & Shredded)
- 1 Carrot (Peeled & Shredded)
- 1 Handful French Beans (Sliced)
- 1 Tbsp Oil
- 1 Handful Garlic Cloves
- Soya Sauce (add to taste)
- Salt (add to taste)
- Pepper (add to taste)
Other Ingredients
- Popiah Skin
- Sweet Sauce / Amocan Chilli Crunch
- Crushed Peanuts
- Lettuce
- Prawns (Cooked & Peeled)
- Hard-Boiled Eggs (Crushed)
Method
1. Place the inner pot of your thermal cooker on the stove and add some oil.
2. Stir fry the garlic cloves on medium heat until fragrant.
3. Add the vegetables for the main popiah filling and season with your preferred amount of soya sauce, salt and pepper.
4. Simmer for 10 minutes and then turn off the stove and transfer the inner pot into the thermal cooker.
5. Let it cook with the residual heat in the thermal cooker for another 30 minutes.
6. Lay out your popiah skin and spread sweet sauce on it evenly. (For the Crunchy Spicy Version, add Amocan Chilli Crunch and a lesser amount of sweet sauce.)
7. Add the crushed peanuts, lettuce, prawns, eggs and finally, the main popiah filling.
8. Fold the sides of the popiah skin in and then roll to wrap.
9. Slice carefully into equal bite-sized portions and your popiah is ready to serve!
